L O C A L R E A L E S T A T E If a house really has a heart or a soul, it must be found in the kitchen (behind the pint of haagen-dazs). As a Realtor I know there’s not one place in your home that can make or break a deal for a buyer like the kitchen. When I first moved into our current home it had expresso shaker cabinets, tan and brown flecked granite counters and faux travertine floors, all the telltale signs of a flipped kitchen circa 2010. The look dated fast and soon I was changing everything. So, if you’re thinking of pouring some serious coin to give your dated kitchen a facelift, lets make sure it stays feeling chic and timeless for many years to come. The three cornerstones of your kitchen design are your cabinets, counters and floors. Cabinets: I love color, but refacing cabinets can be expensive and though that forest green island looked great on your favorite HGTV show it may not feel so chic a few years down the road. White kitchen cabinets are seemingly timeless. They work in kitchens of all sizes and with vintage, traditional or modern design aesthetics, which may be one reason they come up as the most popular kitchen cabinet color. If you want to add some more interesting elements, consider glass doors. Glass cabinet doors allow you to showcase your dishes, collectibles and other special items. And white or cream frames won’t clash with your colorful treasures. Counters: Mother nature really is the best designer and there’s fewer things I find more inspirational than natural elements like stone and wood. Carrera marble has been a favorite since the Romans built the Patheon so to say its timeless is an understatement! Butcher block also looks great on a kitchen island and is a nice contrast to white cabinets. For even more contrast try soapstone. Floors: This is the foundation of your kitchen, but it’s also important to consider the flooring in the rest of your home. Nothing is more tacky and less timeless than a different flooring in each room of the house. If your kitchen opens to the Livingroom try matching the flooring like wood or Pergo all the way through for a seamless finished look.
