The team captured the Or- ange Empire Conference title and advanced to the state finals at Cypress Ridge golf course in Arroyo Grande. It was the best finish since 2003, taking second place. Saddleback finished 58-2. Davalos shot a 76 on the par 72 for a two-day total of 158. She finished second in scoring in the state; five Foothill players placed in the top 10. COMMUNITY SPORTS BY CLIFF ROBBINS AND CHAD CLINE Mathewson inducted into the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame Olympian Courtney Mathew- son, former water polo athlete from Canyon High School, was inducted in the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame on Nov. 14 in cer- emonies at the Marriott Hotel in Irvine. Mathewson contributed to UCLA’s four straight NCAA wins under Head Coach Adam Krikorian. A year later, Krikorian took over the controls for Team USA, and Mathewson began training with the reigning world champions in 2010. After help- ing the squad to its first FINA World Cup crown in 31 years that summer, Mathewson cemented her spot on Team USA in 2011. On the brink of elimination in the 2011 Pan American Games gold-medal match with Canada, Mathewson willed the team back with three second-half goals to force a shootout where the U.S. prevailed, allowing the team to qualify for the 2012 Olympics. Ayear later, Mathewson helped Team USA reach the top of the podium, claiming the program's first Olympic title. The squad fol- lowed with another World Cup crown in 2014, and a FINAWorld Championship in 2015. Mathew- son wrapped her career with a second-straight Olympic crown at the Rio de Janeiro Games in 2016. Her winning ways included a second Pan Am Games Gold and six FINA World League ti- tles. A Pac-12 All-Century Team selection, Mathewson competed domestically for the New York Athletic Club, earning multiple titles there. She's stayed close to water polo, conducting camps, clinics and swimming lessons in SoCal. El Modena announced the signing of two baseball players in the NCAA fall signing.
