Nationally renowned nonprofit Braille Institute will soon have a new presence in the Coachella Valley, featuring its recently launched initiative, called Vision Support America, which assists older adults whose vision is changing. Having served the greater Palm Springs area for over 50 years, Braille Institute will help many more people experiencing changes to their vision through their new state-of-the-art facility in Rancho Mirage. “The need for low vision services in the Coachella Valley has never been greater,” says Braille Institute CEO Dimitri Kales. “As retirees continue to move to this beautiful region, many more residents will need help for vision problems associated with aging. Vision Support America and Braille Institute will be there for them with our free services.” Help for Those Experiencing Vision Changes The center will be a hub for Braille Institute’s low vision services, which were rebranded earlier this year into Vision Support America (VSA). This new initiative builds on the Braille Institute mission by reaching more people earlier in their journeys with vision changes. VSA provides support for those with macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and cataracts, among other issues impacting vision. Resources that Transform Lives The 5,200-square-foot facility, located at 42525 Rancho Mirage Lane, will feature a host of new resources, including a Discovery Lab, where expert staff will train clients on the latest access technologies, including smartphone apps, digital magnifiers, and other tools that support independent living. It will also include a teaching kitchen, low vision assessment space, and a sensory rich Inspiration Garden. “Vision changes exist on a spectrum, and far more people are affected than many realize,” Kales says. “Our new Coachella Valley Center represents our commitment to meeting people where they are — whether they are coping with the first signs of macular degeneration or navigating more advanced vision issues. Our goal is to help every individual retain independence, confidence, and connection to daily life.” Read more about the center at brailleinstitute.org/ locations/coachella-valley. Founded in 1991 by Dr. Reynaldo J. Carreón, the Foundation was built on a simple but powerful belief: education can change the trajectory of a life. More than three decades later, that vision continues to guide the organization as it provides scholarships, networking opportunities, and support to students pursuing higher education. This year, that mission reached another significant milestone. In June, the Foundation awarded a recordbreaking 120 scholarships totaling more than $360,000 to students from throughout the Coachella Valley and surrounding area. The Class of 2026 scholarship recipients included graduating seniors as well as students continuing their college and post-secondary education. Since its founding, the Foundation has awarded more than $3 million in scholarships to more than 1,400 students, with recipients attending more than 50 postsecondary institutions and vocational training programs. The Foundation reports a 90% graduation rate among its scholarship recipients. One of the Foundation’s most important areas of growth is its commitment to students pursuing careers in healthcare. Dr. Carreón Foundation was selected as the 2026 Philanthropic Organization of the Year, an honor recognizing organizations making a significant difference through philanthropy and community impact. The Foundation will be recognized at the 2026 National Philanthropy Day Awards Luncheon on November 6 at Agua Caliente Resort Casino Spa in Rancho Mirage. “This year represents an exciting period of growth and impact for the Dr. Carreon Foundation,” said Executive Director Ricardo Loretta. “We are proud to expand our scholarship support and provide more opportunities A YEAR OF IMPACT: The Dr. Carreón Foundation’s 2026 Milestones Since its founding, the Foundation has awarded more than $3 million in scholarships to more than 1,400 students. continued on page 47

Now located at Lost Creek Canyon Ranch in Whitewater, California, with beautiful views of the San Jacinto Mountains, each day at the Sanctuary begins early and revolves around the animals in its care. Some arrive because their owners can no longer care for them. Others return through the Sanctuary’s adoption contracts. Many require special diets, dental care, veterinary treatment, or simply a quiet, loving place to safely grow old. Every animal has a story. The goal is to make sure its next chapter is filled with stability, kindness, and dignity. So Cal Mini Horse Sanctuary is volunteer-run and supported through donations, sponsorships, and the generosity of people who believe these animals deserve a second chance. Rescue has become increasingly challenging as feed, veterinary, and operating costs continue to rise, but the Sanctuary’s commitment remains unchanged: to help responsibly while ensuring the animals already in its care receive everything they need. As fall approaches, the Sanctuary is preparing to welcome visitors back for private tours and educational experiences. These visits provide an opportunity to meet the animals, learn about miniature horses and responsible rescue, and discover the work that takes place behind the scenes every day. So Cal Mini Horse Sanctuary is more than a place where rescued animals live. It is a place built on compassion, second chances, and a simple belief at the heart of its mission: Every life matters. www.socalminihorse.com So Cal Mini Horse Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit rescue and sanctuary dedicated to giving miniature horses and other animals a safe place to land when they have nowhere else to go. What began nearly 15 years ago with a love for miniature horses has grown into a lifelong mission of rescue, rehabilitation, responsible care, and providing sanctuary for animals that may never have another home.

Guests enjoyed dinner, an open bar and an exciting selection of casinostyle games, including poker, blackjack, roulette and craps. The evening also featured silent and live auctions, a photo booth and opportunities for guests to come together in support of a lifesaving cause. Proceeds from Casino Night supported the 4ShayJ Foundation’s mission to prevent childhood head injuries through helmet-safety education and the distribution of properly fitted helmets. Through its school assemblies and community outreach programs, the foundation teaches children why wearing a helmet matters and provides helmets to children at no cost. For more than a decade, the 4ShayJ Foundation has worked closely with schools, families and community partners throughout the Coachella Valley and beyond. The organization has distributed more than 50,000 helmets and delivered vital safety education to hundreds of thousands of children. The success of Casino Night was made possible through the generosity of the foundation’s sponsors, donors, volunteers and guests. Supporters including Grace Electric, Coachella Valley Foot and Ankle, and The Exception helped make the evening possible and demonstrated their commitment to protecting local children. Every sponsorship, auction purchase and donation made during the event helped the foundation continue reaching students with important helmet-safety education and free protective equipment. The 4ShayJ Foundation extends its sincere appreciation to everyone who attended, donated, volunteered or partnered with the organization. For more than ten years, I have partnered with nonprofit organizations in communities across the country to tell their stories—stories of love, happiness and a better way of life. Every nonprofit has a story worth telling. My job is to bring that story to life and create an emotional connection with potential donors, volunteers, supporters and, just as importantly, the people who may need your services. Through the years, I have discovered one common thread among the organizations I work with: a commitment to making their communities better places to live. That same commitment is at the heart of every project I produce. My clients have included Goodwill Industries, United Way, Charleston Food Bank, ALS Foundation, Specialized Alternatives for Family and Youth (SAFY), St. Thomas University, KKBE Synagogue, Canadian Consul, Operation Home, Second Harvest and many others. A powerful video doesn’t necessarily require a large budget. A story can be told with something as simple as a collection of meaningful photographs or through a fully produced video presentation. What matters most is the story— and how we tell it. Working together through thoughtful planning, creativity and insight, we create powerful video messages designed to build awareness and inspire people to become involved. Videos can be created for websites, social media, fundraising campaigns, special events, educational programs, internal communications and more.
